Following are the list of 20 Free Softwares and Utilities that I use as an installation checklist on every fresh Windows installation. After these are installed, Windows is much more stable and powerful. These applications and utilities are my top picks as most useful to install on every Windows PC, which helps me complete my work easily and effectively.

VideoLAN VLC media player

VLC is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

Homepage

OpenOffice.org

Equivalent to MS Office, OpenOffice.org includes powerful applications for making text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams, and databases, as well as HTML and XML documents. Not only does it let you edit basic documents, such as letters and faxes, it also handles equations and complex and multipart documents with bibliographies, reference tables, and indexes.

Download
Homepage

Notepad is a Notepad replacement with an eye toward programmers, although it should also appeal to the casual user who wants a cross between Notepad and WordPad. Notepad has some noticeable differences from WordPad. Support for tabs is a key, letting users manage different documents simultaneously.

With the K-Lite Codec Pack you can play all the popular movie formats and even some rare formats. This package is mainly for power users and people who do their own encodings.

Homepage

Adobe Flash Player software is a cross-platform browser plug-in that delivers breakthrough web experiences and is installed on more than 98% of Internet-connected desktops. Flash Player 10 introduces 3D effects, custom filters and effects, advanced text support, and more.

Download

FileZilla

FileZilla is a free & open-source FTP application, is handy if you are looking for a solid tool to handle FTP transfers and don’t want to part with your bucks.

Download
Homepage

Firefox

The Firefox Web Browser is the faster, more secure, and fully customizable way to surf the web. Mozilla Firefox is a fast, full-featured Web browser. Firefox includes pop-up blocking, tab-browsing, integrated Google search, simplified privacy controls, a streamlined browser window that shows you more of the page than any other browser and a number of additional features that work with you to help you get the most out of your time online.

Download
Homepage

Google Chrome

Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the Web faster, safer, and easier. Use one box for everything–type in the address bar and get suggestions for both search and Web pages.

Download
Homepage

Foxit Reader

To put it gently, Adobe Reader is a real pain in the hindquarters. It’s monstrously large, slow to load, and includes many features most users will hardly ever need. Foxit PDF Reader 3.0 kills the bloat and throws in some useful features, such as multimedia support and content-sharing options, while still allowing you to quickly access your PDFs.

Download
Homepage

Universal Extractor

Universal Extractor is a program do to exactly what it says: extract files from any type of archive, whether it’s a simple zip/rar file, an installation program, or even a Windows Installer (.msi) package.

Download
Homepage

Unlocker

Ever had such an annoying message given by Windows: Cannot delete file: Access is denied. There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use or the file is in use by another program or user. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. Unlocker is the solution.

Download
Homepage

Sub Menu Pack

Do you get bored of having to open file options every time you show hidden files or show file extensions. Now you can do it and many option by one click from your mouse by this small tiny tool SubMenu Pack.

Download
Homepage

Revo Uninstaller

Revo Uninstaller is a freeware innovative uninstall utility much faster than Windows Add/Remove applet. With its advanced and fast algorithm, Revo Uninstaller scans before and after you uninstall an application. After the program’s regular uninstaller runs, you can remove additional unnecessary files, folders and registry keys that are usually left over on your computer.

Download
Homepage

Flash Get

Flash Get is specifically designed to address two of the biggest problems when downloading files: Speed and management of downloaded files.

Download
Homepage

DAEMON Tools Lite

DAEMON Tools is an advanced application for Microsoft Windows which provides one of the best optical media emulation in the industry. With DAEMON Tools you can back up your physical CD/DVD/HD DVD/Blu-ray discs into “virtual discs” or so called “disc image” files, which run directly on your hard drive. You can also work with images created by other burning programs! DAEMON Tools supports variety of image types.

Download
Homepage

Comodo Firewall

Comodo has merged its antivirus program with Firewall Pro, creating a free security program that aims to be more to more people. Although this may frustrate some users who want only one program or the other, the installer does let you opt out of either of the components.

Download
Homepage

CCleaner

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner.

Download
Homepage

Everything Search Engine

This small software application bypasses Windows search with a lightning quick interface and real-time results for all of the files and folders in your local hard drive or any subsection of it. The software doesn’t do much more than search, but its efficiency, effectiveness, stability, and low system resource usage make it a keeper utility.

Firefox 3.5 has lots of new features and one such feature is Private Browsing. If your computer is used by your friends or family members and you would prefer for them not to be able to see what websites you have visited or what files you have downloaded. In such cases, Private Browsing mode is very useful for us. Private Browsing mode allows you to browse the Internet without retaining any of data about which sites and pages you have visited.

How to Enable Private Browsing mode?

Click on the Tools menu and select Start Private Browsing or use [Shift + Control + P] keyboard shortcut.

The first time you turn on Private Browsing, Firefox will alert you that it will save your current windows and tabs for after you finish using Private Browsing. Click on Start Private Browsing to continue.

You will then enter Private Browsing mode, and the Private Browsing information screen will appear.

If you want to stop Private Browsing mode, Click on the Tools menu and select Stop Private Browsing or use [Shift + Control + P] keyboard shortcut.

In a Private Browsing mode, Firefox would not keep any browser history, search history, download history, web form history, cookies, or temporary internet files. However, files you downloaded and bookmarks you make will be kept.

If you want to delete some specific URL from the Firefox and Internet Explorer’s address bar, refer the following procedure:

2. Go to Start > Run and Type regedit, press enter to launch registry editor.

There are two methods for downloading and installing Firefox in ubuntu.

A. Installing via Repository

2. Add the Launchpad PPA GPG key:

sudo apt-key adv –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys 247510BE

3. Now run below command on your terminal

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5

B. Using Wget

1. Either you can download Firefox 3.5 via any other browser if you have on your Ubuntu or else run following command on terminal to download Firefox 3.5.

wget -O – ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/3.5/linux-i686/en-US/firefox-3.5.tar.bz2 | tar xj –C ~

2. Double-click the Firefox file inside the Firefox folder in your home directory, or run this command:

There are lots of applications/softwares available which allows you to prevent access to websites from your computer. But if you do not want to spend any money, then you can do it manually by using the following procedure:

Go to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc folder.

Find the file named as hosts and open it in notepad [For Linux users, this file is located in the /etc/ directory. you could run a sudo nano /etc/hosts/ to edit the file].

Under the line that says 127.0.0.1 localhost, add a new entry 127.0.0.2 <website to be blocked> and save the file.

For example, if you want to block “www.santabanta.com” website, then add an entry like this: 127.0.0.2 www.santabanta.com

For every website that you want to be blocked, just add “1” to the last number in the internal ip (127.0.0.2) followed by the web address to be blocked, as shown below:
127.0.0.3 website0
127.0.0.4 website1
127.0.0.5 website2
.. 127.0.0.33 website33 …. and so on.

I tested this procedure to block www.google.com website from my windows 7 operating system and it works. After adding entry for blocking Google website, my Firefox and IE browser shows a page like below:

Mozilla has launched a new feature that allows users to create "collections" of their favorite Firefox extensions.

Add-on Collections can be organized by theme – i.e. extensions for students or web designers – or as bespoke selections of your favorite browser plug-ins.

Users can simply visit the Collections Directory, browse through the various collections and install the various extensions separately.

Alternatively, you can download the Add-on Collector extension for Firefox, and subscribe to various collections.

The Collector extension will notify you when new add-ons are added to the collection, but they won’t be automatically installed on your browser.

Each collection also has its own RSS feed, so you can keep up-to-date with new additions that way.

Mozilla has created several sample collections to get the ball rolling, but it hopes they will soon be overtaken by user-generated compendiums. Collections that get the most subscribers will be ranked highest on the Collections website.
