Replace your Icons with Windows 7 High Resolution Device Icons

5 June 2009No Comment

One of the interesting new features of Windows 7 is its ability to find a high resolution device icon for corresponding devices. Most of the time, Windows downloads those icons directly from Microsoft when you install a new device. Icons are not available for every device, but most new devices will have a corresponding icon.

You can access these high resolution icons and use it anywhere. Open an Explorer window and paste the following path into the address bar.

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Device Metadata\dmrccache\

Inside the folder appropriate to your region (ex. en-US), there should be individual folders with GUIDs for each of the devices with metadata associated with it. The icon resides in the “DeviceInformation” folder of each device.
