Colasoft Capsa is a Network sniffer protocol analyzer developed by Colasoft. It performs real-time packet capturing, 24/7 network monitoring, advanced protocol analyzing, in-depth packet decoding, and automatic expert diagnosing. It allows you to get a clear view of the complex network, conduct packet level analysis, and troubleshoot network problems.

The latest version of Colasoft Capsa is Capsa 6.9. The main new features in Capsa 6.9 are the ability to decode Cisco’s Inter-Switch Link protocol to virtual local area network information as traffic negotiates switch and router network paths, and support for the Fiber Channel over Ethernet protocol.

Enterprise Edition of Capsa 6.9 is currently certified for Windows 2000 Professional, XP Professional, Vista, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008, as well as 64-bit versions of these operating systems. I tested it on Windows 7 and it works nicely.

It is very easy to capture and filter network traffic and use the diagnosis analyzer to check different network layers. For example we could check for application layer problems like DNS server errors, and troubleshoot simple mail transport protocol problems.

The User Interface is very simple to negotiate and a few clicks were sufficient to pull network traffic off all our NICs, and perform quite detailed analysis. The provision of easy access web resources on a sidebar was another neat touch, addressing network technicians still new to network protocol analysis.

Network support extends from 10/100Mbit/s systems to gigabit connectivity, and has microsecond timestamp capability. Firms with a simple network can deploy a straight network connection, but managed switches need port mirroring or test access ports if specific network segments need traffic captured.

One area where the competition has a clear advantage is the ability to run on dedicated hardware with certified NICs. Competitors like Network General, Network Instruments and WildPackets all have turnkey appliances able to take 10 Gigabit Ethernet network traffic straight to terabyte-sized storage arrays for detailed forensic analysis.

I conclude that Capsa is a pretty comprehensive package for network analysis, but users requiring high-end features, like the ability to analyze 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections in real time, may need to look at more expensive systems with dedicated hardware.

Google has brought out a translator toolkit that combines the company’s machine translation technology with online tools for manually editing content.

An earlier product, Google translate, allowed users to translate and read websites and plain text in a number of languages. The new translator toolkit targets users who want to edit and polish the translated text, and share or publish it.

Google’s statistical machine translation technology is trained using parallel streams of text in both the original language and the target language. Editing of machine translated text by users of the translator toolkit will help train the machine translation technology to a higher degree of accuracy.

Google’s Indian R&D lab developed the new product, which is the latest of a number of tools developed by Google in India to improve access to content in local languages.

The translator toolkit supports 47 languages, including five Indian languages.

Instead of re-creating content in local languages, Google translate and the translator toolkit allows people to translate existing content.

By an arrangement with Wikipedia, users can download a Wikipedia entry into the translator toolkit, translate it into a local language using machine translation, correct and polish the translation and post it to the online encyclopedia.

Professional translators can also upload personal files to the translator toolkit, and use the toolkit provided by Google, which includes a glossary, and dictionary, among other features. The local file and the translation can be kept private.

A translation memory database in the toolkit provides lookups to previous translations of similar sentences and text.

The toolkit is likely to be useful to publishers of news sites who now can target new audiences with local language editions at a lower cost.

It is a web application and computing platform designed to bring together e-mail, instant messaging, wiki, and social networking, mixed with spellchecker and translator extensions, which are able to work in concert. It is planned to be released later in 2009.

Google announced on the Wave site that the service will feature an open protocol, Google Wave Federation Protocol, which can be used to build a “custom Wave system”. It provides APIs for writing extensions on both the client and server. Google also announced that they plan to release the majority of the source code as open source. Google Wave is created using the Google Web Toolkit.

The official Google blog states some important points regarding Google Wave:

Google Wave a web application where people will use to access and edit waves. It includes a rich text editor and other functions like desktop drag-and-drop.

Google Wave can also be considered as a platform with a rich set of open APIs that allow developers to embed waves in other web services, and to build new extensions that work inside waves.

The Google Wave protocol is the underlying format for storing and the means of sharing waves, and includes the “live” concurrency control, which allows edits to be reflected instantly across users and services. The protocol is designed for open federation, so that any Wave service can interact with Google Wave.
